July is Fibroids Awareness Month

Fibroids Awareness Month

This July we’re raising awareness of Fibroids Awareness Month, a campaign dedicated to shining a light on uterine fibroids, common, non-cancerous growths in or around the womb that affect many people and can have a real impact on daily life.

What are fibroids?

Fibroids are non cancerous tumours made of muscle and fibrous tissue that develop in the uterus. They’re very common, many people will develop at least one at some point during their reproductive years, often without knowing it. Around 2 in 3 women may develop a fibroid by age 50, and for some these growths can cause symptoms that affect quality of life.

Common symptoms to look out for:

  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding.
  • Painful or irregular periods.
  • Pelvic pressure or pain.
  • Frequent urination or constipation.
  • Fatigue related to heavy blood loss.

Why awareness matters?

Although fibroids are widespread, they are often under recognised or dismissed.

Awareness helps:

  • Encourage people with symptoms to seek advice earlier.
  • Reduce stigma around menstrual and pelvic health.
  • Support conversations about diagnosis, treatment and support options.

How they’re diagnosed and treated?

If you’ve symptoms that are affecting your life, talk to your GP. You may be referred for an ultrasound scan to confirm whether fibroids are present. Treatments vary depending on symptoms, from monitoring and medicines to therapies that ease bleeding and pain and are tailored to you.
